Norman Northstars defenceman Cheechoo Lathlin was named the league’s defenceman of the month for November.

Cheechoo Lathlin of the Norman Northstars was named the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League Chicken Chef defenceman of the month for November after recording 12 points in eight games.

The 6’, 190-pound defender is the Northstars’ fourth highest-scoring player this season with nine goals and 17 assists in 19 games, including four power play goals and 13 power play assists as well as one game-winning goal. He scored in five of the team’s games in November, recording multiple points in four of them, including a goal and two assists in a 6-5 win over the Kenora Thistles Nov. 19 and one goal and three assists, all on the power play, in a 6-2 victory over the Yellowhead Chiefs Nov. 6.

Lathlin, who has only 18 penalty minutes so far this season, received only two minor penalties in November.

The Opaskwayak Cree Nation product started his season with the Northstars late, but quickly made an impact, scoring a goal in each of his first three games in early October, including the team’s first win of the season, and recording seven points overall, thanks to a pair of three-point games. Lathlin, 17, has already tripled his previous season high of three goals, which he accomplished in seven games in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season and 46 games in the 2019-20 season, when he finished with 20 points as a rookie.
