Northern Manitobans seeking news and stories about their region have one less voice to inform them now as long-time CBC North Country host Mark Szylszlo, who’s been on the air in the morning and noon for decades, is on a sabbatical until the fall.

Professional live theatre will be back in Thompson Feb. 4 when the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (MTC) presents Armstrong’s War by Colleen Murphy during its regional tour, which also includes performances in Snow Lake tonight and Churchill on Jan.

The Riverview restaurant was the place to be on Dec. 13, during the All You Can Eat Hip-Hop concert. Dag and KP of Poetry in Motion put the showcase on that included performances from Winnipeg artists Khan Vikshyn and Daily up north.

The Thompson Playhouse performed The Red Velvet Cake War Nov. 21-22, on the stage of the Letkemann Theatre.

A craft show currently in Thompson is not only helping Thompson, but also developing countries. Ten Thousand Villages, which started in 1946, is a way for Canadians to work with artisans from all over the world to help sell their pieces.

One thing is certain northerners love to write. Dorene Meyer, a Manitoban author, has released the fifth volume of the Northern Writers anthology. Taking over a year to complete, this anthology features adult writers who completed her writing course.

If you’re looking for something to read, check out some local writers and their stories. On Oct. 18, the Thompson Writers’ Guild released their very first anthology. The pages are full of spooky stories, with a few even based in Thompson.

Little Miss Higgins (aka Jolene Higgins) will be gracing the living room of Tim and Jean Cameron, and Thompson for the next Home Routes concert on Oct. 22.

This month is Libraries Inspire, and the Thompson Public Library is inspiring people through literacy. On Oct. 9, the Thompson Writers' Guild presented a reading of their anthology “An Unkindness of Ravens.
