The School District of Mystery Lake (SDML) wants to expand the parking lot at Wapanohk Community School to accommodate higher numbers of employees than it was originally designed for.

SDML facility manager Orest Chychula sent a letter to the City of Thompson’s development review committee asking the city to provide land adjacent to the existing parking lot and behind buildings on the north side of McGill Place for the parking lot expansion.

Chychula noted that the collective agreement between the SDML and the Thompson Teachers’ Association requires a parking lot with an outlet to plug a block heater into for every school employee.

“At this time the District has 37 parking spots and 54 staff members” as a result of growth in the student population and the staff at Wapanohk over the past few years, Chychula wrote.

The area SDML wishes to extend the parking lot into is currently marked as a road right of way but Municipal Relations urban planner Bret Mack said the province wouldn’t have an issue with the city leasing the school district the land, though he did recommend that a road closing bylaw be approved prior to a lease being completed.
