Projects in Thompson, Churchill, Snow Lake, The Pas, Gillam and Flin Flon are among 120 across the province to ensure health-care facilities are properly maintained.

The projects, with a combined value of nearly $30 million, were announced Feb. 26 by Health Minister Kelvin Goertzen. Forty-four of them, including two in Thompson and one each in Churchill, Snow Lake and The Pas, are worth more than $150,000 each and collectively total nearly $22 million. Eighty more totalling $6.8 million are valued at less than $150,000 each, including one each in Flin Flon, Gillam and Thompson, as well as roof assessments at all health-care facilities in the Northern Regional Health Authority.

“It’s important that we regularly invest in the maintenance of our health-care system to make sure repairs are done and the most up-to-date equipment is used to support quality care,” said Goertzen in a news release. “These investments will ensure that sites continue to meet provincial, national and international standards and keep facilities in good repair.”

Projects worth more than $150,000 in Northern Manitoba include replacement of the make-up air unit at the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba building in Thompson, roof replacement on two staff residences in Churchill, fire safety upgrades at the Snow Lake Health Centre and water booster replacement at the Pas Health Complex. Mould remediation will also be completed in the medical records archive room at the Thompson General Hospital, which will also get a roof replacement, vacuum pump upgrades and/or replacement and phase two of a water booster upgrade.

Northern projects with a value of less than $150,000 include building and environmental assessments for winter wind and snow storms at the Churchill Health Centre, building management system headend upgrades at Flin Flon’s Northern Lights Manor personal care home, carbon monoxide detector replacement at the Gillam Hospital, plumbing repairs at Rosaire House addiction centre in The Pas and front sliding doors upgrades at the Thompson General Hospital.

Other projects that will be start later this year include sprinkler system installation, fire safety equipment upgrades and roof replacements at sites across Manitoba, the province said.
