A 60-year-old man from Baldur died Dec. 15 when the private plane he was piloting from Gillam to Argyle crashed near where he intended to land.

Killarney RCMP were notified that the plane, which was heading for a private landing strip in Argyle, was overdue, having been supposed to arrive about 6:30 p.m. Contact with the pilot and aircraft had been lost just after his intended arrival time.

A search for the missing aircraft was initiated Dec. 15 using a Canadian Forces Hercules airplane. It resumed the following day with participation of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) of Manitoba. The Piper aircraft was located in a wooded area close to the landing strip around 3:30 p.m. and the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said Dec. 16 that it was deploying a team of investigators to the site of the crash to gather information and determine what happened.
