Burntwood and Westwood schools bring new environmental policies into focus

While the student/staff population of Burntwood School and Westwood School have largely remained the same, both institutions are putting a renewed emphasis on environmental policies and sustainable development for the 2018−19 school year.

While the student/staff population of Burntwood School and Westwood School have largely remained the same, both institutions are putting a renewed emphasis on environmental policies and sustainable development for the 2018−19 school year.

Burntwood principal Wanda Einarson, her educators and administrators are attempting to reduce the amount of paper they use for report cards, newsletters, parent correspondence and teaching implements in favour of electronic alternatives.

“So we’re trying to put as much as we can, all the information on our website,” she said. “We understand that some people don’t have the internet and stuff like that, so for accessibility we will print upon request.”

Meanwhile, at Westwood, principal Donna Johnston said the curriculum is being reworked to bring more awareness to water sustainability in a local, national and international setting.

“Every classroom will, at some point throughout the school year, focus on a question about water, whether it’s accessibility to clean water … what’s it like for places that don’t have accessibility to clean water and how they manage that.”

Otherwise, Westwood is hosting a pancake breakfast for its students on the morning of Sept. 28 as a reward for making it through the first month of the new school year.
