Manitoba tied its COVID-19 pandemic record for the most new cases announced in a day Aug. 14, when 40 new positive tests for the novel coronavirus from the previous day were announced.

The number of new cases announced on Friday is equal to the number announced on April 2, though the province’s official online dashboard shows that 33 new positive tests occurred April 1.

Twenty-five of the new cases reported Friday were in the Prairie-Mountain Health region, 10 in the Winnipeg health region and five in the southern health region. The majority of the Prairie Mountain cases are linked to previously announced cases in Brandon, but there are also early indications of community transmission (when an infection can’t be traced to travel or contact with someone who is known to have tested positive).

There are 246 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, 231 involving people who tested positive since the beginning of August. Nearly half of the number of days when there have been 10 or more new cases of COVID-19 announced in Manitoba (nine out of 21) have occurred since Aug. 1, with two other days of more than 10 new cases having occurred in mid-July. There were nine people in hospital due to COVID-19 Aug. 14, three of them in intensive care, while 389 people who had the novel coronavirus are now considered recovered. Eight people in Manitoba have died from the virus.
