Firefighters, RCMP officers and other emergency workers were called to a fire at the University College of the North's Polaris 6 building on Nov. 3.

A fire burning in a second-storey washroom at the University College of the North's (UCN) Polaris 6 building, on 474 Princeton Dr. caused the building to be evacuated around 8 a.m. on Nov. 3.

Deputy Fire Chief John Maskerine says the fire had burned through the ceiling into the third-floor bathroom but crews managed to quickly extinguish it once they arrived on the scene.

The residence portion of the building, on the second and third floors, is home to 42 single students living in 35 suites. The building's first floor and part of the second is dedicated to classroom space and computer labs.

UCN president Denise Henning says that there were no injuries, and most of the students were already awake and in the process of getting ready for their classes.

According to Maskerine, there was extensive water and smoke damage to six residence rooms and two classrooms in the building but there is no estimated value of the damage at this time.

Henning says alternate accommodations have been provided for the 42 students, with classes being moved to other areas on campus.
