Two girls sustained injuries after a single motor vehicle accident in a stolen 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt on Highway 6, about 15 kilometres south of Thompson in the early morning hours of Aug. 6.

Insp. Ken Poulsen, commander of the Thompson RCMP detachment, says that at 4:52 a.m. Thompson RCMP and Emergency Medical Services responded to the accident, where they found two female occupants of the vehicle. Both girls were transported to the Thompson General Hospital with a 15-year-old female then being air medevaced to Winnipeg with serious injuries. The other youth was treated and released from the hospital.

The vehicle involved stolen from a Thompson residence earlier in the evening. Steph Cousins, whose partner owns the vehicle, says they went grocery shopping and when they got home accidentally left their car and house keys in the keyhole to their door lock, not noticing they had forgotten them on the outside of the house, and went to bed for the night. Cousins says that she was awoken at around 5:30 a.m. by the police asking if the crashed vehicle was hers.

The RCMP are still investigating the cause of the accident, but Poulsen says alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor.
