Premier Greg Selinger and federal Minister of Safety Vic Toews announced $102 million of joint funding for the construction and renovation of social housing units throughout the province, including $333,375 for two Thompson properties, on Sept. 10.

Premier Greg Selinger and federal Minister of Safety Vic Toews announced $102 million of joint funding for the construction and renovation of social housing units throughout the province, including $333,375 for two Thompson properties, on Sept. 10.

The funding will cover work at 9,724 units in 163 locations, including construction of 235 new affordable rental units.

"Rejuvenating housing creates healthier, more vibrant neighbourhoods for the families who live there," said Selinger. "The significant investment we are announcing today is an effective way to ensure there is safe, affordable and well-maintained housing in Manitoba. Our government is committed to creating jobs now when they are needed, building vital infrastructure and improving the quality of life for Manitobans."

The money for Thompson will go towards renovations of 36 units at two locations: Princeton Drive and Purdue Avenue in Eastwood, which includes 10 units, and the Northern Harmony Co-Op at 15 Arctic Drive, which has 26 units.

The Northern Harmony Co-op will receive $299,250 for improvements and Princeton and Purdue gets $34,125.

Eligible repairs include general improvement, energy efficiency upgrades or conversions, and modifications to support people with disabilities.

"In its second year, our government's economic action plan is stimulating the economy and creating jobs," said Toews, who made the announcement on behalf of Diane Finley, the minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "Projects like these are a good way to get the local economy moving and put construction workers and trades people to work. Most importantly, they are giving a hand up to those in need during the global recession in Manitoba and across Canada."
