Aden Glatt, a 22-year old firefighter with Thompson Fire and Emergency Services, died Jan. 16 after his car collided with a truck near Creighton, Sask.

RCMP say the crash occurred on the afternoon of Jan. 16, about 40 kilometres west of Creighton, which is located just southwest of Flin Flon.

"He was very bright and energetic," remembered Travis Mirus, secretary for the Thompson Professional Firefighters Association Local 2200. "He was eager to learn and excited to be a firefighter."

Glatt had only been with Thompson F+EMS - his first such job - since early November. His training was done at Lakeland College in Alberta and the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology. He was returning to Thompson after visiting family in Saskatoon, said Minus, who was also his captain in Thompson.

While in Thompson, Glatt had volunteered in the community through various fire department initiatives, including playing Santa Claus for children at some events across town.

"The Thompson Professional Firefighters Association are deeply saddened by this very tragic incident, and wish to extend our condolences to Aiden's family and friends," said Mirus. Glatt's funeral was held Jan. 21 in Saskatoon, with firefighters in attendance including 11 from Thompson as well as some from Winnipeg, Regina, North Battleford, and Saskatoon. The Saskatoon firefighters provided an honour guard.

"I'd like to thank the approximately 70 firefighters who came out to honour Aden," said Mirus. "I would also like to thank the City of Thompson for working with us to ensure that we could travel to Saskatoon to pay our respects, as well as Local 2200 for coming together and working hard to ensure that we could attend the funeral and have our shifts covered at no cost to the city."

The male driver of the truck, which was heading westbound, also died on the scene. A woman in the truck was taken to hospital, but RCMP were unsure of the extent of her injuries. RCMP did not release any information on the identities of those in the crash, however they did note that the highway was snow-covered and icy at the time of the crash, which may have played a factor.
