Steven Belfour, 20, is dead after his snowmobile hit a valley south of Thompson.

The incident happened Saturday morning, along Highway 6 approximately 50 kilometres south of Thompson, near Joey Lake, RCMP say.

Upon arriving at the scene, RCMP as well as Thompson Fire and Emergency Services found the man critically injured. He was taken to Thompson General Hospital, where he later died.

Belfour had been out for a snowmobile ride with his 45-year-old father, on a designated trail, when his snowmobile hit a valley - at which point the 20-year-old lost control of the vehicle and became airborne. No other snowmobiles were involved in the crash.

RCMP say that they believe speed was a factor in the collision, but that alcohol was not involved. Belfour was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

RCMP continue to investigate.
