Northern Manitoba continued to bask in record temperatures, as the mercury reached 26 degrees in Thompson, giving rise to the unusual sight of people ice fishing in shorts and t-shirts at Paint Lake.

The Thompson Stock Car Club had circled June 1 on its calendar as the date for the season's first race and was hoping for at least 14 cars. There were also plans to have bicycle races during the intermissions between the main events.

Blake McGrath, president of United Steelworkers Local 6166, said members of the union would be unveiling a plaque in front of the Steel Centre on April 28 to honour the 75 people who had died working in the Thompson area since the 1950s.
