The Thompson Chamber of Commerce heard that the Outdoor Writers of Canada, a national association, would be holding their annual convention in Thompson in June 1981, with at least 100 out-of-town guests expected.

One grass fire, believed to have been started by children playing with matches, occurred outside Burntwood Elementary School, while another smouldering fire burned its way into the foundation of a Centennial Drive residence after a fire of grass clippings in the yard was not completely extinguished.

Police seized 9.5 kilograms of marijuana from a northbound vehicle on Highway 6 41 kilometres south of Thompson.

Gaity Brown, Nickel Days committee spokesperson, said the annual summer event was going to go ahead despite the city workers strike and that the search was underway for an alternate site. However, if it was not at the rec centre grounds, it would not include the King Miner contest.

Thompson Chamber of Commerce president Tim Johnston said he would like to see more public consultation included in the city's annual budget process.
