That's Coun. Oswald Sawh under the white hood cone mask known as a "capirote," as Blake Ellis, front left, communications co-ordinator for the Burntwood Regional Health Authority (BRHA), and Paul Therrien, chief human resources officer, laugh heartily. The capirote today is most often identified as Ku Klux Klan regalia, although its origins go back at least to the Roman Catholic Nazareno tradition in Spain, where it was worn during the Inquisition and executions by the condemned, but also by flagellants during Holy Week symbolizing the act of penance. Sawh came to Canada when he was seven fromGuyana, the only Commonwealth country in mainland South America. He grew up in Winnipeg and came to Thompson not long after graduating fromuniversity inaccounting. Beer & Skits has a long history of pushing all kinds of boundaries.
