The Thompson Trailbreakers Inc. is hosting the Northern Snowmobile Rally 2010 in Thompson from Feb. 26 to 28.

More than 300 snowmobilers are expected to visit Thompson for the event.

After the event happening in The Pas for the last two years, Colleen Smook says people from The Pas, Flin Flon, Snow Lake, Dauphin and even Winnipeg will be flocking to Thompson to take part in the "fun-packed" weekend.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the event is the fact that Snowmobiler Television and Snow Goer Magazine have committed to coming up to Thompson to be a part of it all and include the event in their programming. Smook says it will cost around $3,500 to bring the company up. While in Thompson the network and magazine will be taken on snowmobile rides and take pictures to showcase what Thompson has to offer.

Smook says she has approached the Thompson Winterfest and Thompson Homecoming committees for donations towards that amount and says the event still needs donations of silent auction prizes. The Thomson Trailbreakers are also currently accepting cash donations to go towards the purchase of a new groomer.

The snowmobile rally will feature a meet and greet on Friday; a celebrity breakfast, snowmobile rides and bus tours, lunch, a supper and social on Saturday; and a poker derby tournament on Sunday.

Randy McKay, who is in charge of the rides that will be happening during the event, says there will be different types of snowmobile rides for people to choose from, including an easy ride to Paint Lake, an intermediate ride to Moak Lake and an advanced ride to Wabowden, with safety personnel on hand for each ride.

But it's not just the snowmobilers who will have a great time at the event, says Smook. People who used to be avid snowmobilers who do not participate anymore will be able to reflect on their years in the activity and meet with likeminded people.

"On Saturday at the Royal Canadian Legion, while the riders are out, we're going to hopefully have a bus tour around town to check out the Spirit Way wolves and things like that, a cribbage tournament and a dart tournament," she explains.

The poker derby on Sunday features a first prize of $2,000 from Rick's Marine, a second prize of $1,000 and a third prize of $500. All events throughout the weekend will be taking place at Thompson's Royal Canadian Legion.
