Neighbourhoods Alive! is investing in 36 different initiatives for young Manitobans throughout the province for the next three years with a total investment of $974,965 from the Manitoba Government.

Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross announced the investments during National Youth Week, which ran from May 1 to 7.

The City of Thompson received $15,000 for its summer travelling camp program, and the Boys & Girls Club in Thompson also got just under $20,000.

Melissa Branconnier, who facilitates Neighbourhoods Alive! in Thompson, says the money is part of a grant called the community youth recreation fund. Last year the travelling summer camp received the same amount of money as this year.

"The purpose of the grant is to enhance or increase recreational activities. The money was used last year to add additional camps and sites to the travelling summer camp, and then again this year it will be used for the same thing. It allows for an increased capacity of the program," she explains. "The Boys & Girls Club received funds to run an after school program for youth over 13, which will begin when school starts in the fall."

Money went to other Northern communities as well, such as Flin Flon, which received $12,500 for their Summer in the Parks/Youth Leadership Base Camp; and The Pas, which received $14,940 for after school programming at the Kelsey Recreation Commission.
