It's official: August was the rainiest month on record in Thompson

The rain that fell - and fell, and fell, and fell - on Thompson last month broke a 24-year-old record for precipitation in a single month, as 236.1 millimetres of rain was received at the Thompson Airport, the most since records began in 1967.

The rain that fell - and fell, and fell, and fell - on Thompson last month broke a 24-year-old record for precipitation in a single month, as 236.1 millimetres of rain was received at the Thompson Airport, the most since records began in 1967.

"This beats the previous record wettest month in July 1986 when 210.4 mm was received," said Dale Marciski of Environment Canada's meteorological service. "What is interesting is that for Thompson this comes after an extremely dry June when only 9.1 mm of precipitation fell."

June's minimal rain made it the driest June ever in Thompson, erasing the previous record low of 22.5 mm in June 1983.

"That wasn't the driest month, however," said Marciski. "That record occurred in May 1973 when only 1.0 mm was recorded during the entire month."

Other areas of Northern Manitoba also broke or came close to breaking precipitation records last month.

"It was the wettest month ever at the Churchill Airport with 181.4 mm," said Marciski, elapsing the previous record from July 1991 when 168.2 mm was received. "Churchill Airport also had their wettest day on record when they received 104.6 mm on Aug. 24."

A record was also set at the Island Lake airport, where 164.6 mm of rain was recorded, making it the wettest August ever. The previous record there was 136.9 mm in 1975.

Gillam Airport received 183.2 mm in August, the second wettest month ever at that location, where 197.5 mm fell in August 1997.

It was also the second-wettest August on record at The Pas Airport, with 154.3 mm. The record for The Pas is 166.9 mm in August 1995.
