WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DON'T HAVE A SHIRT ON? Stage hypnotist Paul Royter has been mesmerizing people like this hapless character and delighting audiences all over the globe for more than 30 years. This photo was taken in 2007 during a return visit to Thompson at Letkeman Theatre.

Hypnotist and locally popular showman Paul Royter will be back in town Oct. 1 to perform at R.D. Parker's Letkemann Theatre.

Royter, whose show begins at 8 p.m., says he has hypnotized over 50,000 people in four different continents and in 22 countries over the last 30 years. "We get to travel all over the world presenting our hypnotic comedy show and we just finished a tour to Australia and New Zealand" Royter says. This show is in support of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.

Royter performs almost annually in Thompson. He says his show "thrives on the participation of members from the audience whose minds are quickly induced into a legitimate state of hypnosis."

Hypnosis, he says, can be used to successfully help treat people with a variety of fears and phobias. It is a powerful tool for helping people with weight loss, stress relief, excessive smoking and countless other problems. Royter is a licensed and certified hypnotherapist who has been trained by the American Institute of Hypnotherapy in California, but doesn't have time to work with people one on one, he says because of his performance schedule.

"There is perhaps no group of people more suitable to be hypnotized than university and college students. One of the reasons for this is that in order to be hypnotized one must be very relaxed, attentive and able to concentrate. Those who have adjusted themselves to studying textbooks and giving their complete attention to situations, are ideal subjects to fall into a trance," Royter says.

"Second to universities and colleges, high school students are one of the most hypnotizable groups of people. Generally high school students do not have the concerns and financial worries etc. that we develop as we grow older. Because of this they are easy subjects for hypnosis. The students love to volunteer and will talk about the show for months to come."
