Westwood School's annual Christmas food drive, put on by the student council, was a huge success. Students collected a grand total of 1,600 food items. Student council promised a pizza party to the class who collected the highest number of non-perishable food items.

Two classes in particular exceeded expectations by collecting over 230 items each. In second place was Treena Osberg's Grade 5 class with 238 food items. In first place and the winner of the pizza party was Debbie Oleschak's Grade 6 class with 314 food items. The 1,600 total doubles the amount that was collected last year.

At the same time as the food drive Westwood School staff and students participated in the Red Cross mitten, scarf and toque drive.

French teacher Astra Holmes had her husband bring in a silver birch, which was placed in the main hallway and the tree was decorated with colourful mittens, scarves and toques of all colours, shapes and sizes. The winter clothing items will be given to the Red Cross this month for distribution to local organizations. A donation of $50 was also made by Westwood Parent Council towards the Red Cross on behalf of Westwood School.

Well done, Westwood students, staff, parent council and community members.
