Shamattawa RCMP received a report on Aug. 29 that a polar bear had been spotted near the river and launched a patrol boat to monitor the bear's movements until it left the area when darkness fell. "The bear appeared to be young, but was quite a good size," said RCMP Sgt. Noel Allard. "The people in the area were quite excited to see it. This is the first time anyone in the area remembers seeing a polar bear."
