Doug Dobrowolski, president of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities, will be here next month as part of their Northern tour.

Doug Dobrowolski, president of the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM), along with other senior members of the Portage la Prairie-based organization, are coming to Thompson May 17 for a "municipal visit" to meet with members of city council.

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities is the primary lobby group to senior levels of government for municipalities in the province. The AMM also operates a trading company, Municipalities Trading Company of Manitoba Ltd. (MTCML) that allows members to purchase products and services at low prices through the power of bulk buying.

In a March 19 letter to city manager Randy Patrick, Donna Belbin, events co-ordinator for the AMM, says the "delegation will be visiting three municipalities and they would look forward to the opportunity to meet with you and your council The purpose of this meeting is to allow you and your council to discuss the issues that specifically affect your municipality with the AMM delegation. It is also an opportunity for the AMM to update your council on some of the issues the AMM board has been involved in during the recent months and what the organization is working on for the future."

The AMM delegation of five includes: Dobrowolski, vice-presidents Shirley Kalyniuk and Roger Wilson, Northern director Karen MacKinnon and executive director Joe Masi. Coun. Oswald Sawh is also an AMM Northern director and will be wearing two hats for the meeting.

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities was created in January 1999 as a result of a merger between the Union of Manitoba Municipalities (UMM) and the Manitoba Association of Urban Municipalities (MAUM). All 197 municipalities in Manitoba are members of the AMM.

Dobrowolski is a councillor with the Rural Municipality (RM) of Macdonald, adjacent to southwestern Winnipeg. He was elected to the RM of Macdonald's council in October 1992 and served one year on the UMM board of directors before the amalgamation of UMM and MAUM. Dobrowolski represents the AMM on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).
