A contract for five years of road renewal design and tendering services was awarded by city council at their March 14 meeting.

Council awarded a contract for designing and tendering five years’ worth of road renewal work at their March 14 meeting.

The contract was awarded to AECOM, one of two companies whose bids met the City of Thompson’s technical requirements, at a cost of $1,567,532 plus taxes.

The other potential bid, from JR Cousin Consulting, had a price tag of $1,804,769.

With the city receiving over $33 million for its five-year road renewal program from the federal and provincial governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the city’s share of the design costs will be about $261,000, or 16.7 per cent.

“This shows that we're actually moving ahead with these projects, we are actually going to pave these roads,” said Coun. Kathy Valentino. “And it's important that we continue to keep public up to date and notified because this is good news stories that we've got with all this grant funding we have for roads and water.”

The city plans to mill and overlay 3.55 kilometres of roads this year, including all or parts of Nelson Road, Beaver Crescent, Elk Bay, Caribou Road, Lynx Crescent, Fox Bay, Silver Crescent, Nickel Road, Wolf Street and Coral Crescent.

Over the whole five years that the ICIP grant funding covers, the goal is to fix up 20 km of city roads.

“Just note that there are some roads that are in bad shape that may not be addressed this year,” said Coun. Jeff Fountain. “They certainly are on our radar. So, in the meantime, buckle up, take a little air out of the tires and hold tight and we hope to get to those in the next year or two if we can.”
