The Thompson man charged with criminal negligence causing death after dropping his six-week-old daughter down the stairs last spring has been sentenced to 17 months in custody.

The basis of the charge was that the man, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, dropped his infant daughter down a flight of stairs while he was intoxicated and failed to seek timely medical attention.

It was shortly after 7 a.m. on May 14 when the baby was brought into Thompson General Hospital. Efforts were made to resuscitate her, but she died around four hours later. An autopsy performed in Winnipeg determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma.

On Dec. 23, the man was convicted on that charge, and sentenced to an additional 17 months imprisonment in addition to the seven months he had already served. He was also placed on probation for two years following his release from custody and was ordered to provide a national crime registry DNA sample.
