Thompson RCMP, with the assistance of the Winnipeg RCMP serious crime unit, Thompson RCMP forensic identification section, and members of the Brandon and Thompson RCMP major crime units, are investigating the murder of 25-year-old David Riley Cook.

Cary Spence, 24, of Thompson has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in Thompson provincial court March 15 and was remanded in custody.

On March 13 at 9:25 a.m., Thompson RCMP were dispatched to the Yale Avenue area of Thompson where a resident, who was walking his dog, located a trail of what appeared to be blood on a wooded walking path behind residences in the area.

Members of the Thompson RCMP followed the trail of blood for about two kilometres on walking paths and snowmobile trails, where they discovered the body of a man later identified as Cook of The Pas.

RCMP determined that the trail of blood originated from a residence in the area of Waterloo Crescent in Thompson where the murder is believed to have taken place.

The victim and accused knew each other, police said.

An autopsy was scheduled in Winnipeg at the Health Sciences Centre March 15.

The investigation continues.
