BRHA wraps up a busy summer

It had been a while since the last formal board meeting of the Burntwood Regional Health Authority (BRHA), but it was clear at the Aug. 26 meeting that the summer period was a busy one for the organization.

"We have had a busy summer as far as executive projects," BRHA chief executive officer Gloria King told the board.

These projects included a visit from Milton Sussman, Manitoba's deputy minister of health, on July 14 to present the BRHA with a certificate of accreditation, certifying the BRHA as meeting a certain level of care. "The deputy minister's tour was a real highlight," King said.

Of course, the BRHA's mandate extends far past Thompson, and King's summer included trips across Northern Manitoba to other communities under the BRHA's jurisdiction - such as a stop in Granville Lake, for which King noted that the BRHA is "making significant plans to help them they're very remote and in need of assistance."

Gods Lake River was another community on the BRHA's radar this summer, and King noted that talks between the two would continue after that community's elections. King added that the perceived role of the BRHA in Gods Lake River is perhaps not quite the same as the BRHA's actual mandate.

Board chair Lloyd Flett added that the travels aren't yet complete. "We'd like to go out to Gillam just to let them know that we haven't forgotten about them," he said. "We're not specifically involved in the communities we'd like to coordinate our efforts to make sure that nothing is missed."

King also suggested that new diagnostic equipment could be forthcoming, saying that "we are in the queue as far as capital projects go."
