Braun's Furniture fined $10,000 for tax evasion

Braun's Furniture pleaded guilty in provincial court Sept. 7 to charges of tax evasion, the Canada Revenue Agency announced Sept. 17. The furniture store was fined $10,000 as a result of the conviction, in addition to the taxes and interest owed.

Braun's Furniture pleaded guilty in provincial court Sept. 7 to charges of tax evasion, the Canada Revenue Agency announced Sept. 17.

The furniture store was fined $10,000 as a result of the conviction, in addition to the taxes and interest owed.

The charges date back to the years 1998 to 2000, when the corporation understated business revenue by $30,000 and claimed personal spending as business expenses.

Braun's was fined $6,500 for acts of evasion under the Income Tax Act. Failure to pay $2,100 of GST resulted in a fine of $3,500 under the Excise Tax Act.

The fines are equivalent to 167 per cent of the amount of taxes that Braun's attempted to evade.

Civil penalties may also be assessed by the Canada Revenue Agency in addition to the fines.
