A 59-year-old Nelson House resident found unresponsive in cells at the RCMP Nelson House detachment last Wednesday died at Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre early Sunday. RCMP released news of his death at 1:06 p.m. Tuesday. Earlier police had reported he was in "grave condition."

On Dec. 30 at about 6:45 p.m., RCMP Nelson House members were called to the local VLT facility to respond to a call of an intoxicated individual passed out in the lobby area, said Sgt. Line Karpish, an RCMP media spokesperson in Winnipeg. . RCMP members attended and noted that the individual was unresponsive, his breathing was shallow and his complexion was pale. Local EMS was contacted and the individual was transported to the Nelson House Nursing Station.

Later that evening, members received a second call that the man was now causing a disturbance at the Nursing Station. RCMP attended the nursing station and at about 10:15 pm, the 59-year-old local man was arrested by RCMP members without incident. Some time after being lodged in RCMP cells, he was noted to be unresponsive.

Emergency Medical Services were called and he was transported back to the Nelson House Nursing Station and subsequently flown to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

Members from the RCMP Thompson Forensic Identification Section, 'D' Division RCMP Winnipeg Serious Crime Unit and RCMP Thompson Major Crime Unit continue to investigate.

The dead man's name is not being released "at this point," Karpish said.
