20-year-old alleged to have dropped baby daughter down flight of stairs while drunk and not seeking 'timely' medical help

Charged with criminal negligence causing death

A 20-year-old Thompson man has been charged with criminal negligence causing death in the case of his six-week old daughter who died May 14.

Shortly after 7 a.m. that day the baby was brought in unresponsive to the Thompson General Hospital. Although efforts to resuscitate her were made, at around 11 a.m. the infant died. An autopsy that was performed on May 15 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg determined that the cause of death was a result of blunt force trauma, said RCMP media relations spokesperson Sgt. Line Karpish of Winnipeg.

The father of the child is facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death. He made his first appearance in provincial court in Thompson May 17. According to a court information outlining the basis of the criminal negligence causing death charge, he is alleged to have dropped his infant daughter down a flight of stairs while he was intoxicated and failed to seek timely medical attention.

There is a court order prohibiting publication of the accused's identity. He also faces four charges of breaching an earlier bail order by communicating with a specific woman, failing to abstain from alcohol; failing to remain as ordered in Saskatchewan and failing to notify the RCMP of any address change.

The accused has been remanded in custody pending his next court appearance May 20.
