A pair of Burntwood Curling Club teams earned spots at the 2017 Viterra men’s curling provincials at a regional qualifying tournament in Flin Flon Jan. 7-8.

The Norman region will be represented at the championships, being held in Portage la Prairie Feb. 8-12, by the team of Shaun Parsons, Kevin Parsons, Bronston Jonasson and Jim Davidson as well as by the foursome of Travis Graham, Grant Brown, Shaun Kennedy and Jeff Ziemanski.

The Parsons team opened the tournament with a 7-1 win over Jonathan Sawatzky’s team, also from Burntwood Curling Club, then earned their spot in the provincials by beating Graham’s squad 13-6.

That was the first defeat of the tournament for the other Viterra championship-bound team, which opened with a 9-7 victory over the Jason Levers team from the Flin Flon Curling Club and followed that up by edging Sam Antila’s squad from the Burntwood Curling Club 10-9. Those same two teams faced off for the second provincials berth in the last match of the tournament, with Graham’s team prevailing 9-3.

Antila’s team had recovered from its opening game loss to beat Grant McLuckie’s team from the Flin Flon Curling Club 9-7 and then the Levers team 9-2 to earn their shot at the second berth.

Sawatzky’s squad beat McLuckie’s team 8-7 to open the tournament and were eliminated from contention for the provincials berths by a 12-7 loss to Levers in their third game.
