Trojan boys win soccer zones for first time in eight years

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s boys’ soccer team rode a string of comfortable victories to their first Zone 11 soccer championship in eight seasons Sept. 28-29, booking a berth in provincials with a 5-1 victory over the Oscar Lathlin Wolverines from Opaskwayak Cree Nation in the final.

Josh Smud, Kyle Tomchuk, Dylan Mulholland, Keniel Williams and Isaak Weenusk had the goals for the Trojans in the deciding game.

Tomchuk had goals in every game for the Trojans, scoring three against the Frontier Collegiate Institute Raiders in a 5-1 win on Saturday morning, which also saw Shiv Vyas and Weenusk add singles. They followed that up with a 4-0 win over Mikisew School on Saturday afternoon, with Williams, Brandon Stuart, Vyas and Tomchuk recording the tallies.

RDPC started off the tournament with a 4-0 win over the Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Education Resource Centre Huskies from Norway House, with goals from Weenusk, Stuart, Tomchuk and Vyas hitting the scoresheet.

Soccer provincials will be played Oct. 12-13 in Swan River.
