The Gillam Figure Skating Club hosted the 2015 Skate Canada Norman Regional STARSkate Championships and FunSkate Jan. 23-25. Skaters from all over the Norman region braved the elements and travelled to participate in the skating events. First time competitors Kayla Vokey, Sydney Power, Levi White and Jaxon Power dazzled and amazed the judges with their glides, crosscuts, turns and spins. Skate Thompson was well represented in the CanSkate Element event. This event is geared towards skaters in the CanSkate program. It is a great chance for the skaters to showcase their new skills in a fun and interactive environment. After each skater performs the element, the referee will call an assessment of gold, silver, bronze or merit according to the criteria for CanSkate standards. Skaters will receive a report card and a ribbon. Awesome skating Kayla, Sydney, Levi and Jaxon!

Jenna Shier, Jordan Johnson, Eleanor Gribbon, Amber Hayduk, Ava White, Julia Huber and Arianna Vokey competed in the STAR 1 FreeSkate. Each skater completed eight elements including a stroking exercise – forward crosscuts on the centre circle in both directions; three jumps – a waltz jump, a Salchow and a toe-loop; and two spins – forward and backward upright spins. The skaters had to do a forward spiral sequence and a creative expression routine. The skaters in the Star 1 FreeSkate Element scored to standard (merit, bronze, silver or gold). Well done!

Hailey Fudge competed in the STAR 2 FreeSkate and Spins. Ava Gribbon and Taylor Chartrand competed in STAR 3/4 FreeSkate and Spins. Katharine Gallagher and Amber-Lee Fountain competed in the STAR 3/4 FreeSkate and Spins. The skaters were judged by their individual elements plus skating skills, performance/execution and interpretation components scored to standard (merit, bronze, silver or gold). Awesome skating!

Emily Penney and Kassia Wolanski-McGirr competed in the STAR 5 FreeSkate and Elements. Anna Krokosz, Madyson Caldwell, and Amy Shier competed in the Senior Bronze FreeSkate, Elements and Spins. Megan Szabo compete in the Junior Silver FreeSkate, Elements and Spins. The skaters are scored CPC and will be ranked. Four components were scored: skating skills, transitions, performance/execution and interpretation. The girls had really great skates and achieved personal best scores!

Jordan Clinton and Ramona Pelland competed in Senior Silver/Gold Spins and Open Duo FreeSkate. Great skating, Jordan and Ramona!

Skate Canada Manitoba Senior Ladies Champion Deidre Russell was the guest skater at the Norman Regional STARSkate Championships. Deidre trains out of the Jonathon Toews Community Centre (Dakota) with Skate Winnipeg as her home club.

Congratulations to Anna Krokosz for receiving the 2015 Norman Regional Supervisor’s Award. Anna demonstrated passion and commitment during her FreeSkate Performance at the Norman Regional Championships. Coach Sue Sutherland was presented with a Skate Canada Manitoba Norman Regional blanket. Sue has been coaching for 44 years. Skating gives Sue life, strength of purpose and joy! Each skater brings a very special and individual set of tools to skating and it is inspiring to watch them develop their skills and the life lessons gained from each pursuit. Congratulations, Sue!
