Over 80 of the province’s best shooters were at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena May 25 to compete in the 2019 Manitoba Junior Rifle Club provincial championship.

About a quarter of this year’s participants hailed from the Thompson Junior Rifle Club, who managed to pick up a number of awards in categories like Under-10 Best Score Rifle (Abby Turriff) and Highest Novice Individual Postal Target (Leah Perry).

The rest of the field consisted of rifle club members from communities including Spruce Woods, Morden, Brandon, Winkler, Deloraine, Dauphin and Selkirk.

Thompson Junior Rifle Club coach Gigi Birch said this year’s event was a big deal, since the Hub of the North hasn’t hosted the competition since at least 2001.

The Thompson Junior Rifle Club recently reformed in 2014 after being on hiatus for several years when the University College of the North was being built.

The Manitoba Junior Rifle Club has been running these provincial shooting competitions since 1954.
