Hockey players from near and far who grew up playing the game in Thompson were back in the C.A. Nesbitt Arena March 7 for the Wall of Fame game to celebrate the induction of notable Thompson athletes, coaches and builders into the city’s Wall of Fame.

Mike Krentz led the orange team to a 7-5 victory, scoring three goals on a line with Greg Long, who had a pair of tallies, and Phil Cherneski, who had three assists en route to being named his squad’s star of the game. Jeff English had the other two goals for the orange team, which trailed only once in the game.

Brian Patterson had a pair of goals and was named the blue team’s game star, with Kelly Edwards and Justin Valentino, with a pair, notching the team’s other tallies, while Mayor Dennis Fenske chipped in with two assists.

Corrie Swirsky, who played university hockey at Concordia was the sole female player who skated in the contest.

Prior to the game, Glenn Laycock and Kathy Valentino introduced the first six Thompsonites to be honoured as Wall of Fame inductees – builders Red Sangster and Terry Murray, figure skating coach Sue Sutherland, eight-time Canadian women’s singles racquetball champion Jennifer Saunders and former Flin Flon Bomber and New York Islanders draft pick Kelly Davis.

Proceeds from ticket sales to the game will got towards the Wall of Fame project, which will see notable Thompson sports figures enshrined on the hallway wall of the Thompson Regional Community Centre.
