Special Olympics athletes plant their flag

Local athletes and coaches helped kick off Special Olympics Awareness Week in Thompson June 10 with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.

Following this event, Mayor Colleen Smook made this week official with a proclamation at the very start of Monday’s Thompson city council meeting. She even took the time to congratulate the athletes who gathered inside council chambers, many of whom participated in Special Olympics Manitoba’s provincial winter games in Winnipeg earlier this year.

This group included athletes like Flora Francois and William Hart, who will be competing as members of Team Manitoba in Canada’s 2020 Special Olympics winter games in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

On Friday, some of these athletes will also be taking part in a law-enforcement torch run for Special Olympics Manitoba, which will start behind the Thompson Regional Community Centre at 1:30 p.m. and finish at MacLean Park around 3 p.m.
