Saunders wins national racquetball team selection event in Alberta

Thompson-raised Jennifer Saunders was the women’s open champion at the Racquetball Canada national team selection event in Grande Prairie, Alberta Feb. 1-2.

Saunders, who now lives in Winnipeg, defeated fellow Winnipegger Christine Richardson 15-3, 12-15, 11-8 in the women’s final, coming back from three points down in the tiebreaker to record six consecutive points for the win. Saunders is the reigning women’s national champion, a title that she has captured 10 times, along with 12 women’s doubles national championships.

Saunders beat Erin Geeraert of Calgary 15-12,15-11 and Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau, Quebec 15-7, 15-2 to finish first in her pool in the round robin and qualify for the final.

National team selection event results are used to determine who will compete for Canada in international racquetball competitions in 2019, including the Pan Am Championships and the 2019 Pan Am Games.
