Saunders wins national racquetball championships in singles and doubles

Former Thompsonite Jennifer Saunders became the holder of the most Canadian national racquetball titles ever May 26 when she beat Christine Richardson of Winnipeg 15-3, 15-13 for her 10 th singles title and 22 nd national title overall.

Former Thompsonite Jennifer Saunders became the holder of the most Canadian national racquetball titles ever May 26 when she beat Christine Richardson of Winnipeg 15-3, 15-13 for her 10th singles title and 22nd national title overall.

The national singles women’s championship came four days after Saunders and first-time doubles partner Frédérique Lambert of Montreal beat Richardson and Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau in the women’s doubles final 15-9, 15-13. That was Saunders’s 12th doubles title and Lambert’s second, but their first together as a team.

Saunders beat the previous record for women’s singles national championships in 2014 when she won her eighth to surpass Heather Stupp, with whom she had previously been tied with seven.Saunders’s previous doubles partner Josée Grand’Maître of Longueuil, Que., with whom she won the 2014 national doubles championship, has the second-most women’s national racquetball titles overall, with 18, and holds the record for most women’s doubles championships, with 15.  Mike Green has 21 national men’s racquetball titles.
