RDPC sending large contingent to track provincials after winning team banner at zones

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s track and field won the Zone 11 championship banner in The Pas May 25-26, with nearly all of the school’s individual competitors and relay teams recording a top-three finish.

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s track and field team was dominant at the Zone 11 track championships in The Pas May 25-26, with all but a couple of individual competitors recording at least one top-three event finish and nearly all the relay teams finishing first or second to help their school claim the banner for overall points.

Half a dozen individual competitors had three top-three finishes each, including Danica Langon, who finished first in the junior varsity girls’ 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres. Madyson Caldwell was first in the junior varsity girls’ shot put, and second in both the discus and javelin throws. Dennita Cameron finished first in the varsity girls’ high jump, second in the javelin and third in the triple jump. Jasraj Kullar was first in the junior boys’ 100-metre hurdles and third in both the long jump and triple jump. Jai Anshul Duggal was second in the varsity boys’ 200-metre dash and third in both the 100-metre dash and javelin.

Thirteen Trojans had two top-three finishes, including Lance Bobesko, who was first in the junior boys’ 100- and 200-metre dashes, and Taylor Watson, who took top spot in the varsity girls’ 100-metre hurdles and outdoor pentathlon. Sheldin Howard was first in the varsity boys’ shot put and second in discus, while Keashae Masters finished one-two in the junior girls’ 200- and 100-metre dashes respectively. Other RDPC athletes who took a first and a second place included Hannah Murdy in the varsity girls’ 200-metre dash and outdoor pentathlon, Curtis Shymanski in the junior boys’ outdoor pentathlon and 800 metres, Jonna McDonald in varsity girls’ discus and shot put, and Ashley Williams in the varsity girls’ shot put and discus. Other Trojans with two top-three placings included Magan Griffin (second in both varsity girls’ long jump and triple jump), Dulnara Harankalna (third in both junior girls’ 400 and 800 metres), Kyler Timmons (second in both junior boys’ discus and shot put), Megan Wischnewski (second in varsity girls’ high jump and third in 100 metres) and Kokia Wong (second in varsity girls’ 800 metres and third in the 400 metres).

Relay teams finished first in the junior boys’ 4x100 metres, the junior boys’ distance medley, the varsity boys’ distance medley, the junior girls’ 4x100 metres, the junior girls’ 4x400 metres, the junior girls’ distance medley, the varsity girls’ 4x100 metres, the varsity girls’ 4x400 metres and the varsity girls’ distance medley. Second-place relay finishes included the junior boys’ 4x400 metres, the junior boys’ distance medley, the junior girls’ 4x400 metres, the varsity girls’ 4x100 metres, and the varsity girl’s distance medley.

Overall, RDPC recorded 14 top-two finishes in 16 relay events and 57 top-three finishes in individual events from a total of 78 individual entries to qualify for provincials at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg June 7-9. Thirty-four individual competitors had at least one top-three finish.
