Rain forces skateboard and BMX championships inside on first visit to Cross Lake

When wet conditions washed out plans for the annual Northern Manitoba BMX and Skateboard Championships to be held at the Cross Lake skatepark for the first time June 2, organizers used Justin Goulding’s equipment from Thompson to set up an impromptu indoor skatepark in the community’s arena, where about 25 competitors from Cross Lake, Flin Flon, Thompson, The Pas, Opaskwyak Cree Nation and Prince Albert, Saskatchewan showed off their moves.

Cahlin Jesso of Thompson took top spot in 18-and-older skateboarding, followed by Jaiden Jacobson of Thompson and Jayden Armstrong of Cross Lake, while the advanced BMX title went to Owen Monias of Prince Albert, with Thompson’s Jayden Jesso second and Marcus Plante of Cross Lake third.

Hometown competitors took the three top spots in the teen skateboarding division, with J.D. Halcrow first, Crosby Malcolm second and Kayden Monias third. Kage Jesso of Thompson took top pricze in the kids’ skateboarding category, with Dex Conaty and Ethan Conaty of The Pas second and third.

The beginner BMX division was also swept by Cross Lake athletes, with B.J. McKay first, Alfonso Malcolm second and Lance Monias in third.

The championships will be held in The Pas next year, Thompson in 2020, OCN in 2021, Flin Flon in 2022 and return to Cross Lake in 2023.
