The peewee AA Thompson King Miners were in Portage La Prairie the weekend of Jan. 5 to burn off some turkey and stuffing!

The tourney opened up against the host team, the Portage Terriers, whose roster includes former King Miner J.J. Oke. The Terriers’ bark was a lot worse then their bite as the Miners took the Terriers for a walk and a grooming, beating them by a score of 6-1. Scoring for the Miners were Reed Scaddan and Bryce Clemons with two goals each and singles to Marcus Moody and Cash Long.

The second game of the weekend, the Miners grounded the Winkler Flyers with goalie Lincoln Richcoon getting the shut out.  Goal scorers were Cash Long, Daynon Smith and B.J. McKay.

Game three, the Selkirk Fishermen were the opponents and the Miners did not disappoint – hook, line and sinker – skunking the Fishermen 8-0.  Cash Long turned the hat trick, Daynon Smith had two goals and singles went to B.J. McKay, Ryder Bassett and Jorden Braun. Goalie Eshar Sandhu recorded the shutout.

The three wins were a result of good team play, strong goaltending and a disciplined and stellar defensive core made up of Malcolm Snooks, Isaac Catcheway, Ryder Bassett and Reed Scaddan.

The final, however, was a different story as another northern team, the Flin Flon Bombers, had their eye on the prize.  The Miners jumped on them quickly leading 5-3 going into the third.  However, costly penalties was the difference between victory and losing … going down to the wire, the Bombers took it 7-6.  Goal scorers in the effort were Daylin Monias with the hatty and singles by Jorden Braun, Kailen Huhtala and Cash Long.

The peewee AA King Miners now focus on their home tournament at the Thompson Regional Community Centre, the 27th-annual Prince-Berscheid Memorial Tournament.  The Miners welcome out all the in-town sponsors and fans to support them the weekend of Jan. 18-20.
