Northstars battle tough opponent in weekend doubleheader

The Northstars played two games Jan. 11-12, fighting hard and losing both contests to the Winnipeg Wild.

On Saturday night, the Wild’s Jackson Klewchuk scored first, followed by his teammates Brandon McCartney and Ryland Hueging, as the Wild skated to a 9-1 victory.

Albert Sinclair scored the only Northstars’ goal in the second period, preceded by a Wild goal by Dean Gorchynski.

The Wild unleashed a punishing third period on the Northstars, with goals from Ethan Clements, Tyson Smith, Klewchuk, Stephen Grahn and Sam Court. The Wild dominated with 55 shots on net compared to 29 for the Northstars.

On Sunday afternoon, the Northstars fought another uphill battle, losing 8-2. Ian Snooks and Ryan Monias scored for the Northstars. Shots on net were 48-19 for the Wild. First period Wild goals were scored by Clements, and Zachary Nicolas. Nicolas and Samuel Mitani scored for the Wild in the second period. Nicolas, Klewchuk, Tyler Thoendel and Gorchynski scored third period goals for the Wild.

The C.A. Nesbitt Arena was filled to about 25 per cent capacity at Saturday night’s game.

The Northstars are at home again Jan. 18-19 taking on the Eastman Selects at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night and 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
