Low round wins tournament for Fayant

Mike Fayant shot a two-day score of 154 to beat Farrol Asham by two stokes at the 42nd-annual men's open tournament at the Thompson Golf Club on the Canada Day long weekend.

Mike Fayant shot a two-day score of 154 to beat Farrol Asham by two stokes at the 42nd-annual men's open tournament at the Thompson Golf Club on the Canada Day long weekend.

Fayant's score of 74 on the second day of competition was the lowest of the tournament, three better than Murray McDonald's 76 on the same day. At the end of the tournament's first day, Fayant was one stroke behind Asham, who shot a first-round 79 and improved by two strokes the following day. Eric Vickman and Kerry Freund, who finished third and fourth in the championship flight, both shot 78 on the opening day and had identical rounds of 79 on the second day to finish at 157.

The first flight was won by Martin Vermette, who shot a two-day total of 167, the same as runner-up Bernie McLellan. Earl Timmons and Marty Clemons were third and fourth in the flight with two-round scores of 168.

In the second flight, Buddy Little emerged as the winner with a total score of 170, one better than runner-up Doug Agar and two ahead of third- and fourth-place finishers Leonard Linklater and Darrell Cater.

Craig Nychyporuk was the third flight winner with a score of 184, beating out second-place John Sinclair and third-place Sam McLellan, who both shot 186, and fourth-place finisher Luc Chouinard, who shot 188.

The fourth flight was captured by Jim Devlin with a score of 188, followed by Chad Neufield one stroke back and Bronston Jonnason and Bill Sutherland in third and fourth with a score of 191.

Reynold Monias Sr. was the fifth flight winner, with a two-day score of 191, with John Crossley in second at 197 strokes. Ryan Merasty finished third with a score of 200 and Terry McLellan was two strokes back in fourth place.

The sixth flight was won by Reg Spence, who shot 199 over the two rounds, 10 strokes better than the runner-up, Peter McCaffery. Phil Hayden was third with a score of 211 and Scott MacMillan fourth at 212.

Shaun Parsons earned top spot in the seventh flight, with a score of 214, followed by Barry Jackson in second with a score of 223 and Tommy Crawley third at 224 strokes.

Seventy-two golfers competed in the tournament.
