Thompson’s top two peewee hockey teams made a big impression during the 2019 Prince-Berscheid Memorial Hockey Tournament, which took place at the Thompson Regional Community Centre Jan. 18−20.

Both the A and AA King Miners managed to clinch the top spot in their respective divisions, beating out rival teams from Flin Flon, The Pas, Norway House and Cross Lake in the process.

The A King Miners repeated their dominant performance from last year’s tournament by beating the Norway House North Stars 10−2 in the finals on Sunday.

Although the game was tied at 2−2 halfway through the third period, the North Stars started taking a lot of bad penalties with less than 10 minutes to go, which allowed the King Miners to score eight unanswered goals.

The AA final between the King Miners and the Flin Flon Bombers was a much more competitive bout, since the two teams were deadlocked at 2−2 when the third period came to a close.

However, King Miners powerhouse Daylin Monias broke that tie in the opening minutes of overtime by intercepting a pass from the Bombers and burying the puck behind their goaltender to secure a 3−2 decision for his team.

In the tournament’s B division final, the Wabowden Warriors beat the Flin Flon Bombers by a final score of 10−8. Meanwhile, Thompson’s B squad ended up losing the bronze medal game to Snow Lake by a 4−2 margin.
