The Thompson King Miners swept their best-of-five midget AA league playoff finals series against the Cross Lake Islanders convincingly at home Feb. 22-24, winning the first two games by double digits and the deciding game by forfeit.

Connor Camphaug, Jonathan Saunders and Casper Stoker all recorded hat tricks in a 13-2 series-opening win Feb. 22 at the C.A. Nesbitt Arena, with Jonah Bradburn, Conroy Halcrow, Kale Mayor and Curtis Shymanski adding one goal apiece. Creighton Chubb and Wilfred McLeod were the only Islanders to beat Thompson goaltender Isaak Weenusk, who made 31 saves. Marcus Ross gave up eight goals in 33 shots in 40 minutes in Cross Lake’s net, while Colby Moore gave up five goals on 15 shots in 20 minutes between the pipes.

Stoker, Saunders and Tazman Higgins each had two goals for the King Miners in an 11-1 win at the Gordon Beard Arena Feb. 23 that gave Thompson a two games to none stranglehold on the series. Bradburn, Camphaug, Halcrow, Mayor and Murphy Krentz scored Thompson’s other goals. Dixon Thomas had Cross Lake’s only goal as Landon Hofer turned aside 41 shots in the King Miners’ net. Ross made 35 saves for the Islanders.

Thompson claimed the championship without taking a shot Feb. 24 as the Islanders forfeited the deciding game.
