King Miners bring home their 16th Munn Cup

Thompson team also wins tournament’s Crockett Cup, while Carroll Aeros get third in their division

The Thompson AA King Miners continue to be the winningest team in Munn Cup history, adding another trophy to their collection during the atom hockey tournament’s 49th iteration this past weekend.

After three days of competition, the King Miners battled their way to the AA finals on Feb. 17, where they went head-to-head with the Swan Valley Stampeders inside the C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

The King Miners had plenty of scoring opportunities in the first period, although Stampeders’ goaltender Scott Tibbett kept his team in the game by making a bunch of incredible saves.

King Miners’ captain Hank Thompson finally broke this scoreless spell with four minutes to go in the second period by splitting Swan Valley’s defense and sneaking the puck past Tibbett.

However, the Stampeders scored around a minute later and the teams were tied at 1–1 headed into the third period.

Unfortunately, the Stampeders got into some penalty trouble that gave the King Miners a five-on-three advantage midway through the third. Tyler Wamboldt quickly capitalized on this opportunity and put away a goal to secure a 2–1 victory for the Thompson team.

After the game, Tibbett was named the top goaltender of the 49th Munn Cup while Drayden Uhrina of the King Miners was awarded tournament MVP.

Elsewhere, the atom A King Miners also found success in their final against The Pas Huskies, winning by an 8–2 margin to reclaim the Crockett Cup from last year’s tournament.

In the Munn Cup’s atom B final, the Norway House North Stars bested the Wabowden Stingers by a final score of 8–3. Meanwhile, the Thompson Carroll Aeros had to settle for a third place finish after narrowly beating the Snow Lake Spartans 3–2.
