The Thompson Midwest Karate Club is hosting the 2020 Joseph Kyrschuk Memorial Tournament at the Thompson Regional Community Centre Jan. 18. The event will be followed by a banquet for participants and their guests at the old Ruckers location.

Last year, members of the Thompson Midwest Karate Club walked away from the tournament with 24 medals in individual and team competition.

Sensei Peter de Beer said this is the first karate tournament to be held in Thompson for approximately two decades.

“We took over the karate club a couple years ago,” he said. “It was pretty much about to shut down. When we took it over, we had eight students, now we have over 80.”

De Beer said that athletes from Flin Flon, The Pas, and Thompson are competing this weekend.

“We have taken the athletes to a number of tournaments and Thompson has proven itself in the JKA karate world.”
