The R.D. Parker Collegiate athletics department honoured two of its best junior athletes to kick off 2019.

Danica Langan and Jacob Fortin (both in Grade 10) haven’t received athlete of the month awards before, but the pair’s hustle and drive throughout January was enough to convince their respective coaches that they are both worthy of this title.

Basketball coach Courtney McKay says Langan is one of the hardest workers on the junior girls’ team and a vital part of their success so far this season.

“Danica never ceases to amaze me in games and practice, as she is always willing to push herself to her limits,” McKay wrote in an email to the Thompson Citizen. “Danica is one of our captains this season and is able to lead her team with ease and is always there for her teammates on and off the floor.”

Fortin has come a long way since the start of the season, says coach Joseph Alcock, beginning as an alternate and now averaging 15 rebounds and 17 points per game.

“Jacob has been noticed for his outstanding rebounding, excellent commitment to defence, and his incredible contributions on offence,” wrote Alcock. “He is extremely coachable and an all-around outstanding young man with a big future in the sport.”

To prepare for the upcoming zone championships, Fortin said he needs to tighten up his offence, while Langan still wants to improve her dribbling.

“I’m not usually the one who brings the ball up the floor,” she said. “So I want to get to a point sometime where I can be 100 per cent confident bringing the ball up and just improve my dribbling and stuff.”

The Zone 11 championships for junior boys’ and girls’ basketball are taking place in Norway House Feb. 22−23.
