On Dec. 10, the bantam AA Thompson King Miners faced off against the Flin Flon Bombers in the finals of the 26th-annual Don MacLean Memorial Tournament.

The Bombers put themselves up by several goals right out of the gate, which made it very difficult for the King Miners to stay in the game.

Even though the Miners put up a valiant effort and managed to close the gap by the third period, they were no match for the Bombers offensive firepower, and lost by a final score of 7–4.

This year’s tournament, which ran Dec. 8–10 at the Thompson Regional Community Centre, showcased a new trophy in the form of the Dylan Cripps Memorial Cup, named after the 14-year-old who, along with his dad Shane and another father-son pair, died back in May in a canoeing accident.

Dylan’s brother James and mother Li were on hand at the end of Sunday’s game to celebrate the Bombers’ win.

Elsewhere in the tournament, the Cross Lake Islanders managed to nab third place by beating the Norway House Northstars in the bronze medal game by a final score of 9–2.
