Alcock brothers earn doubles silver, RDPC third in team standings at junior badminton provincials

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s boys’ doubles team of Ethan Alcock and Evan Alcock finished second in the first-ever junior badminton provincials in Winkler May 3-4.

The Alcock brothers fell in three sets to the provincial champions from Altona’s W.C. Miller Collegiate in the final, taking the second set 21-15 to force a tiebreaker after losing the opener 16-21. The champions took the title by a 21-13 score in the final set.

RDPC tied for third place with Brandon’s Vincent Massey High School in the AAA/AAAA team banner standings with 22 points, three behind second-place Garden City Collegiate and 13 points behind banner winners J.H. Bruns Collegiate.

The girls’ doubles team of Amber Miscavish and Emma Tomchuk finished sixth in their division.

Other top-10 finishers from Northern Manitoba included Kendall Jonasson and Kyleigh Henderson from Wabowden’s Mel Johnson School, who were third in the girls’ doubles event, and Parker Apetagon from Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Educational Resource Centre in Norway House, who finished eighth in the boys’ singles category.

Brady Krentz and Kamryn Horvath of RDPC were 11th in the mixed doubles final standings.

RDPC’s Rylee Boychuck won three of seven round-robin games and missed advancing to the playoffs by a single point, finishing fifth in her pool.
