The School Zone

Welcome back to The School Zone. Since my last article about Bullying Awareness Week, the Youth Aboriginal Council has been very busy yet again. This time they are working on a youth aboriginal conference.

Welcome back to The School Zone. Since my last article about Bullying Awareness Week, the Youth Aboriginal Council has been very busy yet again. This time they are working on a youth aboriginal conference. They have been working on getting special guests, inviting people from out of town, getting sponsors and organizing what is going to happen at this conference of theirs.

The conference is about bringing youth together and every year they have a theme; this year's theme is "success begins with a dream: inspiring youth with a vision."

It is their 10th annual youth aboriginal conference and takes place Feb. 5-7. For more information on the conference they ask that you contact Marie Highway at (204)-677-6229) or Kathleen Kelson at (204) 679-5507. The conference is for people ages 13 to 9, but they are inviting members from previous years for this year's conference.

For those R.D. Parker students looking for a place to work out for cheap, (so cheap it is actually free!) the weight room is open Monday (co-ed), Tuesday (co-ed), Wednesday (girls only) and Thursday (co-ed). It is open from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is a treadmill, two ellipticals, several bikes and quite a few options for those who want to use weights. It is supervised by teachers and if you're interested you should see phys-ed teacher Todd Harwood for details.

The prom committee has been working pretty hard to get things up and running for May. They have already started fundraising by selling frozen pizzas. They have already decided a theme, Paris at Night, and have begun seeing what they can and can't do, and how much money they are going to need. Of course they would probably have an easier time of getting this all done if they had more help (hint, hint!) so anyone interested in helping out should keep an ear out on the announcements for prom committee meetings.

The Drama Students Association is holding a Coffee house today. They will be selling crafts, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate as well. There will be entertainment in the form of other people showing off their talents. If you have a book you want to read an excerpt out of, if you play guitar, if you sing, if you write poetry, or any other talent that you may have come out and show it off.

Winter vacation begins Dec. 21 and classes start back up on Jan. 4, so enjoy your two weeks of vacation, because come February are exams, unless you're in Grade 12 taking the week-long English exam, which, if my sources are right, is right after winter break. Good luck! Until next time.
